Walk in my neighborhood Couple of snapshots I took yesterday in my neighborhood in Seattle on a warm summer evening. I was hoping to capture this warmth in these photos. I walk here every time I need to buy groceries. It is two blocks from my place. ( Read more... ) | | Saturday, August 20th, 2011 | | 6:19 pm |
Albany Bulb - Blast from the Past (2006) My friend Sai commented on Chris Chabot’s very professional photo of the Bay Bridge and said it brought back memories of his and mine visit to Albany Bulb back in 2006. Memories indeed… Albany Bulb is an unusual park in Albany, CA (map). It is a small peninsula jutting west into the San Francisco Bay between Berkeley and El Cerrito. The peninsula is artificial and the place used to be a landfill for construction debris. The dumping started in 1939 when a low hill was dynamited to make room for the Golden Gate Fields racetrack, and the debris was pushed into the bay to build parking lots. The dumping of construction debris from various projects continued until 1987, when lawsuits forced the action to stop. There is lots and lots of concrete, rebar, and leftover construction materials. There is, I believe, a permanent population of “homeless” people, many art installations, even a three-level fort. This place is worth a visit if you ever find yourself near Berkeley. And no, I don’t recall this place feeling dangerous or menacing; it’s used by many dog walkers and runners. ( Read more... ) | | Tuesday, August 9th, 2011 | | 11:33 pm |

Hello From Dover, Kent county, UK.
22, Sat. Toured Tate Britain, Westminster Abbey, walked across the Tower bridge. 23, Sun. Went to Heathrow airport, intending to get my panniers. Virgin Atlantic told me they'll surely have my luggage for me to pick up whenever. So I get to the airport, find a "white courtesy phone," and call them. They tell me to wait, and that someone will escort me to their office inside the secure area. I spent an HOUR waiting for someone to come out and meet me. Finally, I a Virgin person apppeared. The bike (in the box) wouldn't fit through their x-ray machine, so they made me leave it outside (£6.50 for storage). Then I waited some more, calling them every 5 minutes (no, they don't bother to pick up the phone). Finally, I get inside the arrival baggage claim area, and wait some more while they look for my bag. At last, I have my stuff. Put the bike together, change into cycling clothes, and head out for Dover. After nearly getting creamed by a car at a round-about (I was going further along the circle, they were turning off and forced me to exit the circle with them), I begin to understand British drivers. They appear to know exactly what they're doing (No stupidity noticed. compare to: american drivers(?) ). Riding on the left becomes more familiar. Everyone gives me a good amount of room, waiting to pass until there's a gap in oncoming traffic. After cycling through central London, the GPS decides to route me through a tunnel. No, it wasn't a freeway, but very close. Narrow lanes, no shoulder, dense traffic. Worst experience so far. I get out of the tunnel alive and reconsider my plans. Input another destination into GPS, make sure none of the roads in the directions look like major highways, and continue. I arrive at Maidstone, Kent, sometime before sunset. Find a nice, ploughed field to set up camp at. Not visible from the road (very little traffic), far from houses, no reason for anyone to come out and see me. Perfect. 24, Mon. It rained heavily at night. I get out of the tent at sunrise and sink into the mud. The heavily loaded bike sinks into the mud with me. It's a 200 meter walk to the road. I carried the bike. Lovely. The next couple of hours were spent cleaning off mud from my shoes so I could use my pedals. Cycled through the rain to Haversham(?) on the coast, then to Canterbury. The town has been turned into a giant shopping mall. The cathedral is lovely, though. Cycled to Dover. Found a hostel (great place, so sorry they're closing the place very soon). Warm shower, dry clothes. Yay. 25, Tue. Had a huge breakfast (all I could stomach) and stole^H^H^H^H^Htook some fruit and pastries from the hostel. Bought a french phrasebook, map, postcards and stamps. Sent this email and bought a ferry ticket to Calais. To be continued. | | Tuesday, September 11th, 2007 | | 11:47 pm |
